    December Time at AClass

December is a wonderful time to be in Malta. Although it can be quite chilly, when the sun comes out you get to see the lush green landscape which is a welcome change from the dry summer months.

Now is the time to put on your walking boots and go exploring Malta's countryside. The Ramblers Association always welcomes tourists and locals alike on scheduled walks they organise on a weekly basis.

Christmas is around the corner and the Christmas Party organised by the school for all the staff at St Catherine's and AClass is coming up. I for one will be looking forward to a few mince pies and glasses of wine.

January is looking quite busy with several students coming to learn English in Malta . Our booking Business and General English Courses are on the up. Now everyone in the admin office is gearing up to start working on Summer 2010 which hope will be even better than last year.

Myself and all the AClass staff wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    See you in January 2010!!

    Working on Video Testimonials

Well as you can see we have been busy working on short, promotional material to give to our students and prospective students. Nicole and I have been creating free resources for students and teachers to use to impove their English or use in class.

Here is a video we made this morning with Ignazio, fondly known as Nacho. He has been here at school for a little over 5 weeks and everyone in the office has warmed to his free-spirited way of living. I think it needs to be fine tuned a little. One of the computer monitors is switchd off which I think gives the impression it's broken so I want to redo it and switch it on!

In the meantime, I am back to the drawing board so to speak to try and improve on what has already been done.

    Explore Valletta!!

Alison and I took Nacho and Nikki around Valletta for the first time. I created a quiz for them to do while walking around the beautiful city. The questions took them all over the city and to places they might not have noticed otherwise like the beautiful national library tucked away behind a square.

All that hard work deserved a coffee and where better to go than the recently renovated Cafe Premier where one can have a steaming hot frothy cappuccino and a nice slice of cake. The place server all kinds of salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes as well as fresh sushi and tapas. We all drooled over the menu but decided to stick to drinks this time.

We made our way back to the car where I realised I had been given a parking ticket for not displaying my parking meter correctly.

Bummer! This trip to Valletta turned out to be more expensive than I realised!!

There are still very few resources and exercises online so I have created some free Aviation English resources for students and teachers to use for free. Have a look at them and let me know what you think!

    First FELTOM Malta All-Round Success

Well this weekend saw lots of activity for the Maltese EFL community as agents from around the world descended on the Radisson Blue Resort in St Julian's. The three-day event was organised by FELTOM to celebrate their 20th Birthday and was sponsored by various local businesses and Language Travel Magazine, which has its finger on the global EFL industry's pulse.

AClass were there ( yes, little old me) meeting with quality agents in an informal atmosphere. The mood was upbeat with agencies and schools alike looking towards a positive 2010. We explained to them that we offer all kinds of courses from General English to Business English, Medical English and Aviation English.

The event was well attended and very well-organised thanks to the hard work of all the FELTOm board members. A big thanks goes out to them.

Well, AClass is welcoming some of its first pilots on an Aviation English Course in the next few weeks. Their teacher has been preparing for the lessons all week to make sure there is a lot of listening and speaking practise with a balance of English grammar, vocabulary and phonology mixed in. We use specially designed course materials for ICAO level 4.

Study Aviation English at AClass in Malta

Aviation English is growing in popularity especially since the ICAO made it manditory for people to obtain an ICAO level 4 of proficiency. Pilots and air-traffic controllers especially need to be able to hear and communicate clearly over the airwaves. This is where an AClass Aviation English Course can help.

For starters you need to know the the spoken alphabet. This is just the beginning as radio transmissions are frought with static so often you will need to ask for clarification and repetition.

There are no second chances which is why you should train with people who know how to teach English.

    My Claim To Fame

Well I was not as lucky as Alison but I have been in a rather cool video by the band Esteban called Viva La Noia. This was shot last summer by a talented friend of mine who forms part of the Beangrowers a band you should really have a listen. I love Genzora from their first album 48K.

English Language Students at Full Moon Party

Some of AClass' students joined Pierre and myself at Riviera for the full moon party which is an informal gathering once a month when the moon is full. We picked them up from school and all drove down to the beach together singing songs along the way.

Once we got there we bought some water and ice-creams from the bar and made our way along the beach. We watched the sun set as people started to set up their instruments and bbq's. There was plenty to see as some local fire dancers gave an impromptu show. At one point some lanterns were lit and they floated up into the sky before disappearing into the night.

Pierre and his gang entertained us with tribal beats on their jembes, didgeridoos, harmonicas and guitars and lots of people danced to the music.

At midnight we left the crowds and made our way back to the car where I dropped off each student and made sure they got home safely. Everyone had a whale of a time with Mehmet, one of our Turkish students declaring that it was " the best night of my life".

This makes our hard work here at AClass worthwhile.

    Farewell to our Russian Teens

The past few weeks have been full of laughter, English lessons and fun. We had a group come down from St Petersburg with their teacher. Today was their last day and after we handed out their certificates, Pierre and Juanita organised a little farewell party involving pastizzi, a local snack made of peas or ricotta cheese, and soft drinks like our very own homegrown Kinnie. Pierre took the group out and helped entertain the group so he is sure to miss them once they go. I will be adding some of the photos very soon so keep an eye on our website for any new pictures.

    Teaching EFL in Malta

Every week I receive ten to twenty e-mails from people enquiring about teaching at AClass Academy of English. This is great and I am very please we have already got our name out there. The only problem is that many people do not know what is required to teach English in Malta. The rules are quite strict and regulated by the EFL monitoring board which was set up by the government to regulate the industry. If I am not mistaken we were the first country to do this and other countries have expressed an interest in our system.

To apply for a Teaching Permit which is at present renewable on a yearly basis but may change soon you need:

    1. An A-level in English at grade C or above or the EFL monitoring board equivalency exam which is held twice yearly.
    2. A TEFL certificate from a recognised provider (minimum 60 hours)
    3. A clean police conduct record that is no more than 3 months from the date of application
It is assumed that you can work legally in the country. Getting a valid work permit is a whole different ball game and can be quite tricky since the government tries to safeguard the local job market. You would need to have a valid reason to get a permit such as expertise in a highly specialised field.

Once you have all this sorted out you can start applying to schools locally. The best time to apply is in April/May as Director of Studies are gearing up for the summer season.

If possible, apply in person and bring copies of your relative certificates with you. Try to call ahead to schedule an appointment. Mondays and Fridays are usually busy times at school so aim for some time mid-week.

If you apply via email make sure your letter is not full of grammatical errors or the person reading it may not even give you a second chance. Make sure you get the name of the school right or if you plan on sending out an email to lots of schools send the emails separately so it is not so obvious. Also, do make sure you look at the school's website before going for an interview.

Once you get an interview make sure you relax and be yourself. Typical questions might be " What teaching experience do you have?" and " What would you do on a Monday morning in a pre- Intermediate class on their first day at school ?"

Don't be afraid to take your time or to say you are unsure. Honesty is the best policy.

If possible have a few questions of your own. This shows you have come well prepared and take initiative.

Statistics recently published by the government revealed that the industry hires approximately 1,304 teachers. Out of these most (91.4%) were on a part-time basis. If you want to see all the statistics available go to this link for the pdf Malta Statistics Office.

Moby Concert - Great, Shame About the Wait

The Moby concert at Gianpula fields this weekend in Malta was a fantastic event that was marred by poor organisation at the door. The organisers were lucky no one started pushing or there could have been very serious consequences indeed. If I am not mistaken 20,000 people attended the event proof that people are willing to pay for quality entertainment in Malta.

Roll on Isle of MTV. The music line up is ok but who am I to complain when tickets are free! Don't look the gift horse in the mouth.

Summer Time Learning English in Malta

It has been a very exciting but busy few weeks. We have students from all over the world in class so the nationality mix at the moment is great. Turkish, Swedish, Russian, Brazilian, Italian, Spanish and Belgian.

We had a Teen group who have been busy learning English and going to various activities all throughout the week. They have been on boat cruises, danced the night away at a foam party and had good clean fun going to the cinema, horseriding and bowling. As next Monday is a public holiday in Malta, they will be visiting Gozo, Malta's sister island, on a jeep safari. I wish I could go with them as Gozo is one of my favourite places to relax.

Have a look at our summer packages - we offer great value for money.

Learn English in Malta and go to The Isle of MTV for Free

Learn English with AClass and go to a FREE CONCERT.

Yes indeed, on the 8th of July, THE BLACK EYED PEAS, LADY GAGA, METRO STATION AND ESMÉE DENTERS ARE TO PERFORM AT ISLE OF MTV MALTA

The artists will play in a free live concert in the spectacular Il-Fosos Square in Floriana in front of 50,000 people.

“We are thrilled to be announcing a world class line up for what promises to once again be one of the summer’s must-see musical events. The Isle of MTV Malta is unique in offering young people across Europe an exclusive opportunity to experience some of the world’s best new and established artists in the sunshine of Malta,” said Jules Robinson, SVP, Viacom Brand Solutions International. “This event has become a vital annual destination for music lovers from across Europe and we are delighted to be a part of it now for the third year running. For MTV, it’s a great opportunity to work with Malta in producing a stunning event in such beautiful surroundings and on a holiday island location.”
MTV’s cameras will capture all the action from Isle of MTV, to be broadcast in an hour-long live special airing across MTV’s pan-European network in September. For more details, log onto www.isleofmtv.com.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism of Malta, the Hon. Dr Mario de Marco, said that Malta is proud that for the third time running, the islands will be the wonderful background to such a high-profile musical event. “We invite music lovers from all over Europe to come and experience what Malta is all about: music, fun, sun, sea, history and so much more. We look forward to welcoming you, as we’re sure that once again, we will be offering an experience which is hard to forget.”

The Black Eyed Peas are one of the world’s most successful recording artists, gaining global recognition for their breakout album, Elephunk and the singles ‘Where is the Love?’ and ‘Shut Up’ and the subsequent triple platinum album, Monkey Business which sold more than nine million copies worldwide and spawned the Grammy Award-winning singles, ‘Don’t Phunk With My Heart’ and ‘My Humps’. In Malta, they perform tracks from their fifth studio album, ‘The E.N.D’, due for release in June and including the single, ‘Boom Boom Pow’.The Peas' Will.I.Am says, “I can’t wait to take our new European inspired dance sound to Europe… I couldn’t think of a better place for our first Black Eyed Peas show in a long time. Malta….Wow”."I've always wanted to visit Malta", adds fellow band member Fergie, "Plus you always know it's gonna be a party with MTV!"

Lady Gaga is making a welcome return to Isle of MTV Malta after rave reviews for her performance at last year’s event. She hit the big time earlier this year with her number 1 hit singles ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Poker Face’.At just 22, Lady Gaga made a name for herself on New York’s Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song ‘Beautiful Dirty Rich,’ and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek shock art performances. She wrote the lyrics and melodies on her current album, ‘The Fame,’ an infectious mix of two parts dance-pop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock.

An Internet phenomenon and now an MTV ‘Push’ breakthrough artist, Metro Station, are bringing their energetic electronic dance-pop to Malta. The LA band formed as 17 year-olds back in 2006 and their first single, "Shake It", has already become a Top 10 hit across Europe. Metro Station released their self-titled debut album in Europe in March 2009 and continue to build on their multi-platinum success back in the US.

Dutch singer-songwriter Esmée Denters is undoubtedly on her way to musical stardom. Signed to Justin Timberlake’s Tennman Records, the 20 year-old started out posting videos of herself singing on YouTube and now can count some of the best-known songwriters and producers amongst her collaborators, as well as writing songs with Timberlake himself. She brings her edgy, soulful pop-R&B sound to Malta, including her first single ‘Outta Here’, a hybrid of urban beats, pop lyrics and rock attitude.

So what are you waiting for ? Come and learn English in Malta at AClass Language School and go to the MTV concert for free.

Besides music, Malta’s three islands are situated at the heart of the Mediterranean and offer an endless list of things to experience; from meandering in the many museums or the narrow winding streets of Mdina, the Three Cities or its capital city, Valletta; to swimming under the stars in the famous Blue Lagoon or diving the spectacular Blue Hole in Gozo; to partying all night in the many nightclubs or simply chilling out, soaking up the sun and watching the world go by. See you here, we can't wait to meet you!

    Barcelona, anyone?

English Language Travel Agents are a hard nut to crack but we seem to be making lots of progress. It seems to be all about meeting face to face to explain why AClass Academy of English is the best English language school in Malta (I am a little bias of course!) and the place to learn English. I guess in the end we all need human contact. E-mails and Skype help but nothing beats a cup of tea and a proper face to face meeting to size up each other.

All roads lead to AClass English !

Monday was a success and a good start for AClass English Language School. We welcomed a group of Spanish students from Vigo. We provided a selection of Maltese nibbles and drinks for them to eat during the break before showing them around St Julians to get their bearings.

Wednesday - Gearing up for our Spanish English Language Students

Well, I am glad to say I am busy preparing for our first group of Spanish students. I am looking forward to getting back into the classroom for a little bit. I love teaching because you learn so much about other people's lives and ideas. I find I can connect to people I might otherwise never be privileged to meet.

So I need to get their welcome packs ready as well as buy a notice board and some extra mugs for tea and coffee. After all we need to offer them a good cuppa. I mean how can I teach them about unstressed sounds without the ^ sound of c^pp^ ?

Other than that, the highlight last week, which I forgot to mention, is out microwave !!!!!

    Brochures Printed

Our designer dropped off the brochures today and although I wish I could tweak them, considering the time frame we had to produce them I think they are up there with the best. If you have a chance go to our website and have a look for yourselves!!!

    AClass Moves into Offices Downstairs

Well, we have finally made it downstairs. My office is lovely. I have a glass wall that means I can see the internet cafe from my desk. It is full of light and really cosy. It actually makes coming to work even more pleasurable. Our office supplies have been delivered and we are gearing up towards promoting AClass Academy of English and our English lessons and classes. AClass wants to be known as the school in Malta to learn English.

Starting 2009 with a Language Learning Bang!

Well 2009 has started with a bang here at AClass Academy of English in Malta. I never knew learning English in Malta could be so much fun! No, seriously. Pierre and I have been rushed off our feet working on the promotional material for the school and editing and proofreading the text. Next on our list are the manuals to give to agents, teachers and students. So far things are heading in the right direction. We should be moving downstairs sometime next week into our offices. It will be much nicer as we will be right next to the 8 classrooms and the internet cafe.

I have added a link to my Learn English Malta on the ning network.
